Today
in music.
I accidentally found two songs that go
together in a very special way.
White Flag by Dido and Lost by
Linkin Park.
You can interpret them as the two sides to one
tragic relationship.
Dido sings ;
I
know you think that I shouldn't still love you
Or tell you
that
But if I didn't say it, well, I'd still have felt it
Where's
the sense in that?
I promise I'm not trying to make your life
harder
Or return to where we were
I know I left too much
mess and destruction
To come back again
And I caused nothing
but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if
you live by the rules of "it's over"
Then I'm sure that
that makes sense
But I will go down with this ship
And I
won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag
above my door
I'm in love and always will be
From
this person's point of view
The feeling is one of regret and
hopeless determination. There is no fixing the relationship, no going
back. The person has mostly accepted that it is over, as far as their
former lover is concerned. “If you live by
the rules of "it's over", I understand you can't talk to me
again.”
But for them, they will go down with the ship. It
is tragic in the way a person who has lost love but never abandoned
it, must try to move on. I know you dont love me any more, but I sill
love you.
Meanwhile
Linkin Park is singing;
Just
a scar somewhere down inside of me
Something I can not repair
Even
though it will always be
I pretend it isn't there (this is how I
feel)
I'm trapped in yesterday (just a memory)
Where the pain
is all I know (this is all I know)
But I'm tired, I will
always be afraid
Of the damage I've received
Broken promises
they made
And how blindly I believed (this is all I know)
And
I'll never break away (can't break free)
'Cause when I'm alone
I'm
lost in these memories
Living behind my own illusion
Lost all
my dignity
Living inside my own confusion
From
the other person's point of view.
They have not successfully
moved on from the relationship, but the feeling here is very
different. They are the injured party, having believed in love and
promises, they were deeply hurt by the "mess and destruction"
the other person caused. “They get lost in memories, but they are
living in pain and confusion.” They needed the relationship to end
for their own protection, but the end did not bring peace of mind.
They may be right to hate their former lover, but they dont hate
enough to be happy that the relationship is all over.
It
is just a theory about two songs that have no connection that I know
of.
But it is a powerful expression of my own past.
